Meet the Director

“I am excited for the chance to be involved in such a major restoration project from the outset and by the great support Liberty Hall receives from the community,” said Dr. Jurgena. “Liberty Hall is a fabulous combination of beautiful architecture, exciting history, and wonderful personalities shining a bright light on Kentucky’s rich past.”

Dr. Jurgena has held a wide variety of professional positions over the past 12 years. Most notably, Dr. Jurgena spent time as the curator of Arbor Lodge State Historical Park in Nebraska, which was home of J. Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Day. She was also the James Research Fellow for the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a history professor for Peru State College. Dr. Jurgena enters into her role as Executive Director of Liberty Hall Historic Site from five years of professional museum consulting in the area of historic textiles and museum administration.

Dr. Jurgena’s extensive education and training afforded her several notable opportunities. Of particular note, Dr. Jurgena’s research on a South Central New York quilt landed her on the first episode of HGTV’s 2003 series Quilts: Secrets Hidden in Fabric.

“I have been searching for a site that would allow me the opportunity to combine my education and experience in museum administration, exhibitions and public programs,” said Dr. Jurgena. “But I am also very passionate about historic preservation of both archives and architecture and to be able to further all of those interests in one position is better than I had ever hoped for.”

Dr. Jurgena comes to us from Nebraska with advanced degrees in the areas of Museum Studies and Administration, Education and History, including a doctorate in historic textiles. She received formal conservation training at the Ford Conservation Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
