Furnishings

Liberty Hall Historic Site has a collection of furnishings that rivals any in the state of Kentucky. It includes pieces from the late 18th through the late 19th centuries that are among the finest examples of style, craftsmanship, and materials. They represent a geographic range of origination that includes Kentucky, the great cities of the East Coast, Europe, and even Asia. These pieces illustrate the wealth and class of the Brown family and most actually belonged to the family itself. Others, like the piano, have been donated to us as fine examples of their type and to represent family pieces no longer present.

The items selected here have been chosen because they are unique, unusual, or extraordinary examples of their kind. Some represent the work of known craftsmen (such as the piano) and contribute to the knowledge that exists about these craftsmen and the places they worked. Other pieces are extremely fine examples of their kind (such as the Pembroke table) and demonstrate the artistry that craftsmen possessed. A few pieces, like Margaretta's sewing table, are singular in their style and design and are type specimens in the furniture world. These pieces are among the finest and most interesting in the collections and as a whole illustrate the importance and magnitude of them.
