Portraits
Liberty Hall Historic Site is privileged to have a collection of portraits that not only encompasses some of the foremost artists of the 19th century but also includes four generations of the family and a number of other noteworthy individuals. The collection includes works by Matthew Jouett, Robert Burns Wilson, Oliver Frazier, Chester Harding, and John Wesley Jarvis among others. Most of the immediate family that lived at Liberty Hall and the Orlando Brown House is represented as are several other relatives. Also found in the collection are portraits of Governor James Garrard and Sarah Blanchard, wife of Lexington silversmith Asa Blanchard. These works of art are often the most enjoyed items at Liberty Hall Historic Site and are among its greatest treasures.
One of the main reasons that the portraits at Liberty Hall Historic Site are so popular is that they provide a very human face for the stories told here. They show how the family dressed, wore their hair, did their makeup, and otherwise adjusted their appearance. They also provide a very real hint of the personality of the people that are interpreted at Liberty Hall Historic Site.
