The Brown Family

Senator John Brown and his wife, Margaretta Mason Brown, made Liberty Hall in Frankfort their home in 1801, five years after construction began in 1796.  Liberty Hall, and later the Orlando Brown House next door, would be home to the Brown family for four generations.  Family residence at Liberty Hall ended in 1934, with the death of Mary Mason Scott, John and Margaretta's great-granddaughter; family residence at the Orlando Brown House ended in 1955, with the death of Anne Hord Brown, another great-granddaughter of John and Margaretta Brown.

In those four generations, and generations beyond, the Browns of Liberty Hall were leaders in politics, community, business, literature, and other fields, both in Kentucky and nationwide.  Among John and Margaretta's descendants are Missouri Governor and Senator Benjamin Gratz Brown and children's author Margaret Wise Brown.
